We've stared at these for years, can we recall in which car?

Speedos from the 50s AND 60s and even some from Europe

And here is our first test. Recognize this one?

No multiple choice here. That's too easy for car lovers as smart as you.

SO what say you?

This one is from a car in the 60's.

And the answer is:

I bet you recognize this one. I know I do from my grandfather's car

And so you say it is from:

Sorry no dash but this is the speedometer from an American Classic, and your hint is, they were called "Doctor's" cars.

Come on. This is an easy one.

Well this is a unique one. Not very big sitting in the palm of the hand.

Ever see this one? My Aunt Romaine had one of these. No, the lettuce wasn't named after my aunt, but thanks for asking.

Back to the test, what say you??

Hmmmm, a very small one here. And it may not even be for a CAR!!!

Or is it? The clocks ticking..........tik tok tik tok...

Now THIS ONE, should be easy for one of our members. Are YOU that one?

Note the big 1st number then smaller 2nd zero after that. Does that help?

You know you've seen these. BUT WHERE???

If you get this Iconic speedo wrong, please send your car lover membership card in and maybe take up knitting or crochet.

This one isn't even a test, it's a GIMME your answer

Hmmmmmmmm, now what car does this belong to? Sorry for the angle but if you try hard enough, you may just know it comes from a (_____________)

No, you can't fill in the blank using your keyboard. But you can shout it out. Maybe we can hear your answer.

OUCH, tough one here. I've never sat in front of one of these. Have you?

Almost looks like a clock, but it's missing the 12.

And that 1 looks like an I. Who's idea was that??????

I love the Aqua color. This one sure looks like something very familiar and YET the note by the photo on the internet says it's not what I think it is. THE INTERNET MAY BE WRONG.

Any ideas? Any clues? Any one home???

Okay a little help here. The steering wheel being on the right should tell you, this is not an Amercian car, and NO it's not the Postman's Jeep.

Seems odd to be looking to one's own left to see the speed huh?

So whatya say?

This one has a bullet hole in it so it may be from Bonnie and Clyde's car BUT IT'S NOT............

But it is from a 50s car. Ignore the numbers in the pic. They are there to confuse you.

So, now that you are no longer confused, what do you think????

NOw I bet nearly EVERYONE has seen one of these. I don't think the car that carried this speedo could ever attain the max speed on the gauge.

I bet 80 was it's top end. And it would be buzzing at that speed.

Buzzing is a helper word for those of you who don't get out much.

My, my, my, what a sweeping speedometer. Meant to infer the idea of sweeping you off your feet as you push the go pedal to the floor.

Yes this is 50's art. A lost treasure today.

Recognize it?

Sure you do. Don't be bashful. You're with friends here.

This little gem is from another one of those "Doctor" cars. Note, the gold plating. Gives it a feeling of elegance and richness. Now you know why your doctor bills are so high.

So, what make is called the Doctor's car??????????

Come on you farmers, this is burned in your mind from driving it into town on the weekends to get some viddles and grog and take in a moving picture show.

Did that help?

I can't help you didn't grow up on a farm. I did. And I'm the one making this up.

So tough noogies. :-)

Hey, hey, hey, whatya say this one is?? Look at all the elegance.

When I look at this, I know I'm in the wrong car. We could never afford one of these.

But maybe you've been blessed and drove one of these. If so, thank the Lord and answer the question: What car is this from?

Oh look at this one, it even comes with antique dirt on it. That dirt may be from some historic place. But it's the speedo we are interested in.

Do you know it? Or is the dirt causing you too much distraction???

Come on you ol' timers, this one is IN YOUR FACE.

That means it is looking at YOU and waiting for your CORRECT ANSWER.

Don't be shy or bashful, this is a safe place to say:

I DON'T KNOW. Just don't say it outloud.

Let's hear it for this speedo being in what make of .....hmmmmm car, truck???

and for our final pic of a speedo, any ideas come to mind for this jewel?

No, Jewel is not a clue. I'll tell you when there's a clue. There's NO CLUE.

It's up to you to get this one on your own. I know you can do it.

We are all pulling for you to shout out _ _ _ _

There's a clue, it's a car with a 4 letter name. Yes, BMW. Very good!

And that ladies and gentlemen and others concludes the speedo exam.

Now speedos can also be known as a very skimpy pair of bathing suit for a man.

Please, do not get them confused.

I will post the answers that I was given from the internet as to what make car the speedo photo was taken. If it is wrong, blame the internet.

So, the answers will be in the next post.

The answers are:

1. Chrysler Imperial 2. Dodge Charger 3. Oldsmobile 4. Buick 5. NASH

6. Dodge 7. Pontiac 8. Chevy 9. Pontiac 10. Hudson

11. Kaiser Pickup 12. Morris Minor 13. Chevy 14. Volkswagon (BUZZING MEANT BEETLE) 15. Mercury

16. Buick 17. Ford Truck 18. Cadillac 19. Plymouth 20. Chevy

21. Ford

I hope you learned and enjoyed this thread. It's purpose is to make us recall a time when this was and still is ARTWORK. And design was of the utmost importance, in the success of a car, or it's demise.

I enjoyed bringing it to you, and I learned from it as well.

18 car nuts gave this a thumbs-up. Do you? Thumbs-up

And here it is. PROOF I don't have a real life. Well actually it's too hot to work in the garage today and so I am cooling off in front of a fan recalling some of the best memories of times gone by too quickly.

Today's age of "plastic" just doesn't cut it when we can see the craftsmanship in design and production of these simple things called the dashboard or speedometers.

Little did I know they'd become a lost art as the car industry "PROGRESSED" into the next generation.

Oh well, I am still able to enjoy the memories, and see these at car shows, and on the internet.

Time to head to the garage.

Very nice Speedometers Rob from many different cars. Amazing how the car designers thought of so many ways to show us how fast we were going back then.

Today we have digital electronic speedometers that give us basic info on speed. I'm OK with that. Cheers!

Can't you put an AC unit in your garage thru wall or window if you have. You certainly would warrant one with the heat you get there. Then you can work on your cars anytime. Cheers.

I like the HEADS UP display now. I just bought a small unit off Amazon to put on the Blazer. The gauges are so dark and the speedo didn't work. I started going through the process of figuring out the problem but it got too technically challenging for me. Too much electronic mumbo jumbo and I look like a certain president with deer in the headlights look.

For $32 I can now see my speed and more. I will swallow my pride for $32. There I said it.

The HUD is an awesome option. I had that on my 2012 BMW 5 Series and it worked great. One of the best cars I ever owned. I later traded it in for a 2015 Grand Cherokee 4x4. We need that here in Snow Country NY. Cheers.

The garage I put up is all metal Mario and the best way to insulate is with foam. With the end of summer almost here, I was going to wait a month or so when demand is a little less for the foamer.

It is nice to work in from about 6 AM to 10 AM and sometimes, 4 hours is enough and then it's time for a nap and milk and cookies.

A/C is in the plans.

OK Good you have a plan for AC. I wouldn't want you to keel over from Heat Exhaustion or worse from Heat Stroke! I know we're at the age of Forgetfulness, now so I'll keep reminding you! Cheers!

What was I supposed to remind you of? Hmmmm.....

Sometimes I don't remember who I am, but I can still tell you what a taillight on a 56 Chevy or 55 Ford looks like!

I guess we remember what we want to!
