~ Chapter 47 - Stairway to Heaven ~

~ Follow The Red Brick Road to Chapter 47 ~ Stairway to Heaven ~

~ A Brooklyn firm, Empire Demolition, had submitted a low bid of $140,500 to tear down the Labyrinth of crumbling brick buildings between Boyd and Canal Streets in the heart of Stapleton ~ The tear down was accomplished in 1976 ~

~ Bechtel Brewery, Stapleton. Demolished by fire, 1931 ~ All Three top photo's and the newspaper article courtesy of Nicholas Georgianis ~

~ Staten Island Advance, July 11, 1975. ~ For a larger photo click on the picture of the newspaper in order to read ~

~ Nicholas Georgianis when the Piels Brewery was demolished back in 1976 I went there with my 6 year old daughter Dina ~ I picked up the loose red bricks and put them in my Station Wagon while my daughter was having fun piling them neatly in the back of the wagon ~ Back in '76 I built steps from those red bricks leading from my house out to the patio before I later built a porch over them in the early '90s. ~ The red brick steps are still there under the porch with the Staten Island newspaper shellacked to the bottom of the brick steps ~

Nick Mondelli - August 7, 2016

~ This porch was built by me in the early '90s and was built over the existing red brick steps that were built in '76 with the help of my daughter Dina in collecting those red bricks back at that time ~ My two grandson's Eric, Dean and myself are standing directly over the Piels Brewery red brick steps in this photo ~ Photo courtesy of my daughter Donna taken on Fathers day in 2016 ~

~ My daughter Dina who helped me with the red brick collection back in '76 at a later date sitting with Milo at the current steps to get on the porch ~

~ Notice the hanging lamp both on the porch and my wife Elizabeth's picture ~ The lamps are one and the same because I liked it so much that I refused not to use it again after we moved from the apartment living to the new house in '64 ~ lol
