Mario's Tribute to the Canadian Dodge Mayfair 1953 - 1959

Dodge Mayfair 1957

This is my Tribute to the Canadian made Dodge Mayfair produced between 1953 through 1959. The uniqueness of this car is that it has a Dodge front end with a Plymouth rear end and is based on the Plymouth platform.

My inspiration for this Page came from our very own American Torque’s George D. George created a great Page on the Canadian Automotive Museum in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada for AT. This is where I first saw a picture of a 1957 Plodge (Plymouth/Dodge) so I decided to do some research, and I created this Page.

In 1956 Chrysler of Canada opened a new V8 engine plant. The Dodge Mayfair was now V8 only, while the lower-priced Dodge Crusader and Dodge Regent could be had with either a six or V8.

A totally new body designed by Virgil Exner debuted in 1957. It was a styling sensation with its low lines, plenty of glass and thin roof designs.

The Dodge Mayfair's last year was 1959, but it made its mark in the Canadian Automotive Market. Thank you, George, for the inspiration. Enjoy, Mario.

1 1953. The Dodge Mayfair was an automobile built by Chrysler of Canada. It was produced solely for the Canadian market from 1953 to 1959.

2 1953. Its American equivalent was the Plymouth Belvedere based on the Plymouth. The front of the Mayfair is a Dodge, and the back is a Plymouth. They were built in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

3 1953. The Dodge Mayfair name first appeared as a 2-door hardtop in the 1951 Dodge Regent series, just as the Belvedere appeared in the Cranbrook series.

4 1953. The 1953 Dodge Mayfair adopted the same paint scheme as the 1953 Belvedere with the roof color sweeping down onto the rear trunk.

5 1953. When the 1953 models were introduced, the Dodge Mayfair was again the hardtop in the Regent series.

6 1953. In April 1953, Chrysler of Canada introduced a new, upscale series to do battle with the Chevy Bel Air and Pontiac Laurentian.

7 1953. The D43-3 Dodge Mayfair was introduced in both hardtop and sedan models.

8 1953. The exterior had the front fender trim extended onto the front door and backup lamps were standard.

9 1954. With the new D43-3, the Dodge Regent Mayfair hardtop was dropped.

10 1954. Plymouth rear end on the Canadian Dodge with a Dodge front end.

11 1954. Interiors were two-tone, in either blue or green, with a matching steering wheel.

12 1954. 228 ci L-head six 108 hp. Under the hood, the engine was increased from 218 cu in to 228 cu in and Chrysler of Canada introduced Hy-Drive on their models.

13 1954. Chrysler of Canada offered a convertible in its Plymouth-based models.

14 1954. Chrysler of Canada imported the Dodge Mayfair convertible from Detroit.

15 1954. For 1954, the Dodge Mayfair used the same interiors of the new Plymouth Belvedere.

16 1954. The Hy-Drive system was a torque converter that shared its oil with the engine along with a clutch and a 3-speed manual transmission.

17 1955. The Dodge Mayfair was largely a Plymouth Belvedere, using that car's 115 in wheelbase and body with Dodge's front sheet metal and Plymouth’s rear sheet metal.

18 1955. The front is a Dodge the rear is a Plymouth on a Plymouth platform.

19 1955. The Hy-Drive unit was eliminated for model year 1955.

20 1955. Plymouth and Dodge offered Power Flite 2-speed automatic with its new dash-mounted control lever.

21 1955. The V8 engine was introduced to Chrysler of Canada's low-priced models in 1955.

22 1955. Only the Dodge Mayfair offered a V8 in 1955.

23 1955. The engines were imported from Detroit with various covers, manifolds, electrical pieces and rubber parts.

24 1955. Canadian Dodge Regent 4 door sedan with optional spotlights.

25 1956. In 1956 Chrysler of Canada opened up a new V8 engine plant in Canada.

26 1956. The Dodge Mayfair was now V8 only, while the lower-priced Dodge Crusader and Dodge Regent could be had with either the six or V8.

27 1956. The Power Flite automatic was controlled by new dash-mounted push buttons.

28 1956. A 270 cu in V8 was installed and later the all-new 227 cu in V8 was introduced.

29 1956. Canadian Dodge station wagon with Plymouth rear end.

30 1956. Canadian Dodge 4 door sedan with full extended Continental Wheel Kit.

31 1957. Totally new bodies were designed by Virgil Exner and debuted in 1957.

32 1957. The all-new 57 Models were a styling sensation with their low lines, plenty of glass, thin roof designs and large tailfins.

33 1957. A Redesigned instrument panel with Chrysler Corporations new 3 speed Torque Flite automatic was now available.

34 1957. A stylish 4 door hardtop.

35 1957. New designed Thin roof line and swept back tailfins.

36 1957. New interiors and new color schemes.

37 1957. 303 cu in V8.

38 1957. Canadian Dodge is based on a Plymouth platform. It was a Dodge coming and a Plymouth going. (Plodge). Built in Windsor, Ontario. Canadian Automotive Museum, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Courtesy of AT George.

39 1957 Dodge Mayfair Front and Plymouth Rear Split screen. The 4-door sedan was a popular and high seller.

40 1957. All Chrysler Corporation cars adopted Torsion-Aire torsion bar front suspension.

41 1958. Grilles, taillights, and trim were all that were new for 1958.

42 1958. New taillights same as Plymouth.

43 1958 Dodge Mayfair 313 cu in V8.

44 1958. Same instrument panel from last year.

45 1958. New grill.

46 1958 was a disaster year for the Canadian Dodge with sales falling over 40% from 1957 as it was in the U.S. also.

47 1959. The Mayfair's last year was 1959, when it was downgraded a notch to take the place of the Regent, while the Crusader was dropped from the line up.

48 1959. The 1959 Mayfair still came in two and four door versions of the sedan and hardtop.

49 1959. It also imported a 3-seat Custom Suburban station wagon and convertible.

50 1959. The wagon models were 318 CID V8 only, but the other models were now available with either the 251 CID flathead six or the 313 CID V8.

51 1959. All new redesigned Dodge front end as well as an all-new Plymouth rear end.

52 1959. The vehicle has been commonly referred to as a Plodge because of the extensive use of Plymouth components with Dodge front grilles and sold at Dodge dealers.

53 1959. For 1960 the Canadian Dodge based on the Plymouth would be replaced by another Plymouth-based car, the Dodge Dart.

54 1959. The Mayfair would become a sub-model of the Dart line for 1960 and renamed the Phoenix.

Well well well, if you're not careful you may just learn something with this type of thread. Very well done with each year callout and availability.

The progression of the engines was nicely detailed. And even the different models from coupe to station wagon.

And this lineup wouldn't be complete without some fins.

Nice work Mario and thanks to George for the inspiration.

Thank you Rob for your insights and comments. This was indeed a large research job on my part not knowing much about the Canadian Dodge with the Plymouth rear end. Very interesting.

The Dodge was really a Plymouth all around but by adding a Dodge front end they were able to call it the upscale Dodge without much effort. And price it as such.

At least they didn't call it a Dodgemouth. :-)

I agree Rob, although Plodge isn't that much better! :) I like the Mayfair name best.
