Mario's Tribute to the Fabulous 1959 Cars

1959 Pontiac Motor Trend Car of the Year

The American auto industry had a fantastic rebound year in 1959 with total sales of 5,929,252. The 1959 model year ended with Chevy sales of 1,462,140 units for number 1 and Ford number 2 with 1,450,953. Plymouth was a distant 3rd with 458,261.

There were 58 million cars produced during the 1950s by the American manufacturers. Chevy produced 13,419,048 for 1st place, Ford produced 12,282,492 for 2nd place and Plymouth 3rd place with 5,653,874.

1959 was the year of the Fins! They grew in 1959 with Cadillac winning for the largest fins. Some cars had double fins like the Pontiac. Chevy had large horizontal fins, Buick had slanted fins, Plymouth had vertical fins, and Dodge’s fins started from halfway down the car all the way to the rear. Every car make tried to outdo the other. The year of the fins ended the Fabulous Fifties Decade.

Motor Trend’s Car of the Year for 1959 was the Pontiac which is why I made it the Cover Car to this Page. And the 1959 Buick LeSabre Convertible was the Indy 500 Pace Car for 1959.

This is my Tribute to the Fabulous 1959 Cars. Enjoy! Mario.

I was 12 years old in 1959 and I was totally engrossed in all the new cars. I went to all the car dealers and carried as many new car brochures home as I could carry.

The 1959 Cars in my opinion were very unique with their huge fins, large engines and incredible horsepower.

This is my tribute to the Fabulous 1959 cars.

Enjoy, Mario.

Well I'd be willing to bet, there's no moss growing on that computer and keyboard is there?

Happy New year Mario, and I like how you started 2026 off with this offering. I was 8 back then when you were 12.

I like the pic of you in front of your WIDE TRACK Pontiac......look at how wide those wheels look.

I also like the 59s as car designers were still DESIGNING cars and not making cookie cutter copies on a computer. You can see the differences in the cars of 1959.

I feel a great loss looking at new cars and the classics. If I were a designer, I would have quit while the quitting was good and walked away from the computer generated models. It's like having the talent to paint a masterpiece and you're handed an ETCH-A-SKETCH and told that is your drawing board.

New cars don't seem to have character. Yes they are safer and get better fuel mileage and have their good points. But the colors, the different materials used in the making of the 59s was more of a sculpture that came to life with a turn of the key.

I drove my grandfather's 1958 Oldsmobile Super 88 with the secret fuel cap location. I used it to get to work at a small convenience store, that had gas pumps and deli and a slide open the top soda machine and wooden racks for the empty bottles. I was glad the store had fuel pumps as that Olds was a thristy monster. I always thought the S designated by the shift lever meant SUPER.

My hats off to you that you didn't sit on your hands but rather gave us yet another look into the word of classics.

As you, I look forward to many more pages of your contributions to our hobby. Well done Mario, Well done indeed.
