Mario's Tribute to the 1962 Ford Cougar 406 Concept Car

1962 Ford Cougar 406

The 1962 Ford Cougar 406 was a Concept Car designed by custom car builder Dean Jeffries in collaboration with Ford Motors to push the boundaries of automotive design. In my opinion it was a fine automobile years ahead of its time.

With its Gull Wing Doors top hinged, electrically operated, comfort-engineered bucket seats recessed into the body and the big block 406 cubic inch V8 this car definitely pushed the boundaries. It had an aerodynamic design, concealed headlights in the tips of the front fenders and finned stop lights in the rear.

The Cougar 406 was introduced at the 1962 Chicago Auto Show and was very popular. It was then commissioned to appear in the 1963 movie “Under the Yum Yum Tree”. The movie starred Jack Lemmon, Carol Lynley, Dean Jones, Edie Adams, Imogene Coca, Paul Lynde and Robert Lansing. George Barris was commissioned to paint the car Candy Apple Red for the movie. The original paint color was Sapphire Blue.

The Gull Wing Cougar 406 then went on to appear in the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. It was shown in the Cavalcade of Custom Cars Exhibit which was held in the Transportation & Travel Pavilion alongside many other Custom and Concept Cars.

Unfortunately, the car went missing for decades but it is believed to still exist in Detroit, Michigan and owned by Joe Moridian, unrestored as of 2013. Enjoy the show, Mario

1 In the early 1960s, renowned custom car builder Dean Jeffries collaborated with Ford to create a concept car that would push the boundaries of automotive design. The result was the 1962 Ford Cougar 406.

3 In 1962 Ford Motor Company announced the Cougar 406 as a new show model from the outfit that had pioneered the personal car.

4 Entrance was through top-hinged, electrically operated gull-wing doors. Pure theatre before the engine even turned.

5 The car was framed as a two-passenger, metallic-turquoise sports machine that aimed to excite dedicated sports-car fans while preserving the comfort and style expected of a personal car.

13 The windows used a jalousie layout, a deliberate break from convention that set the tone for the rest of the car.

14 Inside, comfort-engineered bucket seats sat recessed into the body, the driving position fronted by an aircraft-type control panel.

15 Even the rear-view mirror had been built into the panel and operated by a lever, as if borrowed from a cockpit rather than a boulevard cruiser.

16 Under the hood, the headline number was in the name of Ford’s new high-performance 406 ci producing 405 hp.

17 The Cougar 406 also played the proportions game well. It stood only 49.5 inches high and spread 75.72 inches wide. The length measured 180 inches on a 102-inch wheelbase.

18 The 1962 Ford Cougar 406 was a concept car for the Thunderbird built by Dean Jeffries for Ford Motor Company and designated as D-523.

19 Headlights were concealed in the tips of the front fenders. The car had headlight covers in front of the headlights that rotated down.

28 Cougar 406 was a bold departure featuring gullwing doors and a sleek futuristic interior. Its sleek, aerodynamic body lines and distinctive finned taillights emphasized its forward-thinking design.

The 1962 Ford Cougar 406 is a very classy and futuristic aerodynamic car. I am glad to find out it wasn't destroyed like so many others of the original Concept Cars.

From the picture I posted it is in dire need of being restored and I hope the owner or someone else will take on the task to preserve the history of the Unique 1962 Cougar 406. Enjoy, Mario.
