Mario's Tribute to the 1960 Chevrolet

1960 Chevrolet

Chevrolet had a great year in 1960 and produced 1,653,168 autos, 200K more than in 1959. Ford produced 1,439,370 for 2nd place and Plymouth a distant 3rd with 483,969. Total US autos produced in 1960 were 6,696,000 beating 1959 by 700K units.

In 1960, car buyers were demanding smaller vehicles. Compact cars were marketed heavily by every auto manufacturer in stark contrast to the 1950s.

1960 produced the compact Chevy Corvair. It remains the only American designed mass produced passenger car with a rear-mounted air-cooled engine. Total Corvairs produced were 250,007 second to the successful compact Ford Falcons 435,676. Compact Plymouth Valiant produced 194,292 cars for 3rd.

The Chevy 4-door sedan was still the best seller, but station wagons were increasing in popularity and ranked second in Chevy sales. This is my Tribute to the 1960 Chevrolet. Enjoy, Mario.

I was just 13 years old in 1960 going on 18, and a huge car buff. I was itching to get my driver's license so I could "go cruisin".

My Dad was buying a new car every 3 years trading in the old one and I wanted to drive but I was too young so they said.

My pleasure was building and painting scale model car kits and collecting the latest car brochures from all the dealers. And waiting to be old enough to get my license and my own car. Enjoy, Mario

Okay let's all sign along:

Seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee the USA, in your Chevrolet!!!!!!!

The pic in number 10 is my pic for 1960.

That car is painted the same as my first car, a 1965 Mercury Comet CALIENTE......that means HAWT!

I was 9 in 1960 and beginning to get the itch in the car hobby field. I started out driving a Massey Tractor sitting on my Grandfather's lap as well drove around cutting the grass around the schools. He was in maintenance. I was the envy of every other 9 year old as I piloted that Massey .

I believe I was busy building model airplanes at 9. My uncle who was in the Air Force took me to Olmstead Air Force Base in Middletown Ohio to an air show. Oh and the 100 series fighters were there on display and a B52. That thing was humongus. I started with the F100 Super Sabre, then the F101, 102, etc. I think I was probably around 13 when I got the car bug at that was in 1964.

I can't ever recall US, as in my grandfather owning a new car. He did buy a new 1961 Ford F100 pickup, to use around the school but that was it. 6 cylinder 3 on the tree not even a radio. Business only.

When I came back from working the farm for 3 years and mastered my skills on a John Deere pulling a baler, and a hay wagon and able to get that concoction through a gate, I was confident with my driving skills by then.

So I can't comment on being able to drive any 1960 cars. I rode in them, that's all I can say. You know without a seat belt on slippery vinyl seats as you slid from side to side in the turns.

Nice work Mario.....keep the theads a'comin.

Rob
