Chevrolet had a great year in 1960 and produced 1,653,168 autos, 200K more than in 1959. Ford produced 1,439,370 for 2nd place and Plymouth a distant 3rd with 483,969. Total US autos produced in 1960 were 6,696,000 beating 1959 by 700K units.
In 1960, car buyers were demanding smaller vehicles. Compact cars were marketed heavily by every auto manufacturer in stark contrast to the 1950s.
1960 produced the compact Chevy Corvair. It remains the only American designed mass produced passenger car with a rear-mounted air-cooled engine. Total Corvairs produced were 250,007 second to the successful compact Ford Falcons 435,676. Compact Plymouth Valiant produced 194,292 cars for 3rd.
The Chevy 4-door sedan was still the best seller, but station wagons were increasing in popularity and ranked second in Chevy sales. This is my Tribute to the 1960 Chevrolet. Enjoy, Mario.

I was just 13 years old in 1960 going on 18, and a huge car buff. I was itching to get my driver's license so I could "go cruisin".
My Dad was buying a new car every 3 years trading in the old one and I wanted to drive but I was too young so they said.
My pleasure was building and painting scale model car kits and collecting the latest car brochures from all the dealers. And waiting to be old enough to get my license and my own car. Enjoy, Mario
