Mario's Tribute to the Fabulous 1960 Cars

1960 Olds 98 Convertible

1960 All new compact models Chevy Corvair, Ford Falcon and Plymouth Valiant were introduced. Later, Lincoln Mercury released the Comet. It was supposed to be under Edsel, but low sales for Edsel changed that.

Chevy beat Ford in sales 1,653,168, to Ford’s 1,439,370 and Plymouth’s 3rd with 483,969. The Top 3 were over half of the total US auto production in 1960 of 6,097,863. 1960 production beat 1959 by 168K cars.

Aluminum replaced iron and steel to reduce weight in many models. Mechanical advances were on display as we saw the first air cooled rear engine car made in America, the Chevy Corvair, Motor Trend’s Car of the Year for 1960.

In 1960 the first alternator was used in a production car, and the Indy 500 Pace Car was the 1960 Olds 98 convertible. My Cover choice for this Page.

1960 was the continuation of the Import car invasion and the Big 3 finally produced the much wanted compact cars. Amazing they all came out the same year!

But the Horsepower race was still on and going strong. The 60's lost their Fins and pastel colors for more subdued paint.

The cars were still getting longer, wider and lower but with the replacement of heavy steel by aluminum the weight remained the same or got lighter. Here are the Fabulous 1960 American Cars for your enjoyments. Mario
