CHAPTER 33 ~ The '40s on the lower East Side

Orchard ~ Grand ~ Delancy Streets

Ridley’s Department Store on the corner of Grand and Orchard Streets. They’ve really cleaned up the streets in this advertisement, haven’t they?

I’m not sure where this picture was taken but it illustrates a cluster of buildings constructed before the advent of tenement construction.

Hyman Moscot stands outside of his shop at 94 Rivington Street sometime in 1934. He began his business selling eyeglasses out of a pushcart.

CHAPTER 33 ~~ The Lower East Side in the '40s

Orchard ~ Grand ~ Delancey Streets

Due to the inclement weather pattern we have been having in New York we decided that it would, once again, be best to spend the day at the Woodbridge Mall in New Jersey where we can stretch our legs, walk around and than have something to eat at one of the surrounding restaurants in that area...While at the Mall I noticed a new fast food type of structure being built in the lower end of the mall that made reference to "Orchard & Grand" with photo's of olde time Franks, pickles and knishes along with additional pictures of people in olde time dress wear...This fascinated me and started to bring back memories of the past and of those olde times in Lower Manhattan when I was about 14 years old...

So while living in Astoria, Queens was just too great to bare in the late '40s it was time to venture further outside of my new living quarters to better understand what the distant lands also contained to help capture my exploring imagination...

With my new made Greek friend called Adam (Curly) Gounaris RIP who was a master on the handball courts and also a great showman on the sports bars (trapeze) we would take the Elevated Trains to Manhattan to look up such places as Sol Moscot Eyeglasses and also Louie Levy Suits in the Lower East Side of Manhattan...

I can recall when going to Sol Moscot Eyewear down around Orchard Street, and looking at all the various designer wear frames that were in style and on display but they were never the way I wanted them to be when completed..Don't misunderstand me as their corrective glass lens did correct ones vision as required, but the frames would change in their design pattern once the glass was inserted into the frames (probably because the glass shape was not cut down to fit the frame properly), but the price was always right for a 14 year old youngster like myself...I am almost certain that the Sol Moscot of todays times are much more in tune to the new technology available to them to keep the design the way they should be...

There were many and different shops to brows back in those days including on the carts that would line Orchard Street ~ Grand Street ~ and of course Delancey Street too.!!!...My wife just reminded me that we bought the material for our Sunnyside, Queens apartment window drapes when we first were married later in the '60s, but that's another story as we have not yet completed our adventure in the '40s...

This link will take us back to the way the Lower East Side appeared back in those '40s olde days... http://www.boweryboyshistory.com/2015/05/the-grand-tale-of-orchard-street-and-life-on-the-lower-east-side.html

Orchard Street at Winter time did not stop business for these poor venders

My beautiful wife back in the early '60s with the shown material for our drapes that was purchased in the Lower East Side..For a larger photo click on the picture with your mouse

In this photo it is able to see the material that was for sale to be used for our Sunnyside apartment windows

The back yard Fire Escapes that saved many lives during any fires that might occur and also their use for cloths lines back in the '40s

Nick at age 14 when Curley and I would venture to the Lower East Side by Elevated Trains and Subway System in the '40s

An extraordinary view of Delancey Street in 1904 during the widening process for access to the Williamsburg Bridge.

Williamsbergh Bridge and Delancey Street have something in common

And here’s what Delancey looked like in 1928. This is from the top of a hotel from Delancey and Chrystie. You can see the elevated train that went down Allen Street. Orchard Street is the next block in the distance. Allen Street too was subject to expansion. And see the building labeled Bank of the United States?

~ This clothing line photo was placed on Facebook by Diane Moden to wish all her friends on FB a Happy Saturday and as they say, "the rest is history" ~

Thanks for sharing, some of those things I remember. My mom would take me downtown to shop sometimes. I had an aunt that lived in one of the old buildings with fire escapes and narrow dark halls. I loved my aunt but always felt kind of sad to see where they lived, how small their apartment was, and also realizing that they were much poorer than we were. As I was born in Astoria, and lived in nice housing even though we were far from rich. I am thankful to my parents who did the best they could with what little they had, and how they sacrificed. My dad's been gone for over thirty years and mom at least twenty seven, and how I still miss them, they were good people. Sorry for getting so wordy, but your e-mail brought back many memories. Again thanks, Mary Ellen

Thanks much Brandon......Much Appreciated...Hope you enjoyed the book and the 1945 New York story....

By the way I think I just may also have a Tiffany story for you Too.!!!........Nick

*Donald Trump and Marla Maples - Summer 1993 ----------------------------------------------------------- In 1993 Liz and I were in Atlantic City on one pleasant day but could have gone to any other place that day but we did not......We could have gone into any casino on the boardwalk that day but instead kept on strolling until we came to the Trump Plaza Casino and at that point and by chance, decided to walk into that casino..........When we were inside this casino we could have kept walking straight into the casino but instead decided to take the escalator to the next floor to see the beautiful stores located in this casino......... When we reached the top of the escalator we noticed the "Tiffany Jewelry Store" right in front of the escalator.......Who did we see in this jewelry store......?.........You guessed it, none other than the famous Donald Trump and Marla Maples........The reason that they were in that store was to pick out the engagement ring for this soon to become lovely bride........The story was in the papers the next day..... The people watching this purchase was Liz and I, about 3 or 4 people standing out side the store and the clerks in the store.........There were no reporters that I saw or noticed in attendance..........Apparently "the adjustment bureau" at work........... As it turned out, after getting married the Trumps first child was a beautiful baby girl and she was appropriately named 'Tiffany'.......

~ Thank you Diane, about a year ago I was in a New Jersey Mall and I noticed a new Food Vendor that mentioned Orchid Street, Grant Street and Delancey Street on the billboard but as one would have it they never did open for one reason or another ~ Those names were memories in my childhood days so I had to come up with another short story for my growing kids and this link will get you to that story and the photo's that go with it too ~ http://www.americantorque.com/page/0/3456/
